About This Spot

Japengo greets you like a warm island breeze — where the rhythm of the Pacific meets the laid-back elegance of Maui’s coast. Situated right by the water’s edge in Lahaina, this Pacific Rim restaurant offers more than just a meal; it’s a moment to slow down and savor the subtle beauty of Hawaii’s evening light as the sun dips behind distant islands.

The pace here invites you to linger. Whether you choose a seat indoors or on the patio overlooking the ocean, there’s a quiet vibrancy that fills the air—a place humming with friendly conversations, gentle surf sounds, and the occasional clink of glasses. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a laid-back stage set for shared stories and quiet discoveries over thoughtfully crafted plates.

Walking through Japengo feels like entering a place where flavors from across Asia gracefully intertwine with Hawaiian ingredients and spirit. The menu blossoms with thoughtful combinations — from delicate sashimi cuts that shimmer with freshness to warming bowls of seafood curry that hold a hint of island spice. The tastes here are balanced, with dishes that often surprise you, like a bright salad with tropical sweetness or a savory bao bun stuffed with crispy pork belly. Cocktails play a subtle supporting role, offering refreshing pauses between the ebb and flow of each course.

More than the food alone, it’s the atmosphere that leaves an impression. You’ll notice the easy, genuine attentiveness of the staff and the way the low-lit evening seems to soften everything, making the experience feel intimate even in a lively dining room. At sunset, the fading light drapes over the restaurant, painting everything in golden tones and framing moments that linger in memory.

Japengo is a place where the ocean breeze and Pacific Rim influences meet in harmony—a spot to indulge your senses while feeling effortlessly at home, whether you’re savoring sushi rolls, nibbling on curry-dusted calamari, or enjoying a slice of rich, comforting Ka'Anapali pie paired with a quiet moment of reflection.

My absolute favorite place on Maui now! I loved everything about it. The spectacular views, the ambiance, service, and great food!! We had the chefs special roll and the fuju (sp) roll. I had a chirashi bowl, he had roasted pork with kimchi mashed potatoes- YUM!! Excellent service, very friendly! Valet parking.

The sushi here is great but they wanna kill you with overcompensating rice due to the restaurant being on hotel grounds and thus commanding a premium price. I'm ok with PREMIUM price but not premium rice portions. It ruins the fish ratio. Also, seating at the patio is hot and humid. This creates a problem as the fish get warm on first bite from the sushi chef's table. Inside seating is very limited. Definitely a hit and a miss. The curry seafood dish was just alright. Lobster was over grilled. With Masa name attached to it, they should really use better wasabi. They can afford it

I’ve been to Japengo four times already, and I finally had to leave a review because this is truly my favorite restaurant in Maui. Their sashimi is so fresh every single time if you love sashimi, you have to try the Moriawase Raijin. The udon is also a must, and the Kāʻanapali Roll is bomb, one of my favorites. The only thing I wish is that the curry had a little more sauce, but other than that everything was amazing. And they even surprised my boyfriend with a free crème brûlée for his birthday, which was such a sweet touch. Highly recommend this place if you’re in Maui!

Japengo Maui is the kind of place that makes you understand why people come to Hawaii and immediately start speaking in sunsets. As we roll into Christmas week, do yourself a favor and make a reservation—this place gets busy for a reason. You’re rewarded with a killer view as the sun drops behind Lānaʻi, and it’s basically dinner-and-a-show… just know that if you choose to sit outside, Maui may casually remind you who’s boss with a breezy little gust that turns napkins into kites. Let’s start strong: the Korean Seafood Pancake. Crispy, packed with seafood, and ridiculously flavorful. It comes quartered, which feels generous—until the first bite. If your party is more than two people, consider ordering a second one preemptively, because “sharing” becomes a myth real fast. Next up, the ever-faithful Spicy Edamame. Great flavor, but a fair warning: the chili oil makes it a little messy, like your snack is trying to turn into a slip-and-slide. Still worth it. We tried the Blackened Tuna Roll—beautiful presentation, solid execution, but for us it landed in the “good, not life-changing” category. If you’re used to excellent sushi (NYC-area standards), it’s more “respectable” than “remarkable.” Not bad at all—just didn’t steal the spotlight. A quick public service announcement: the Hamachi Collar Bone is one of their most popular dishes and it sells out early. We showed up around 6:30pm and it was already gone. If you’re set on it, aim for 5:30pm and move with purpose. Now—quietly, unexpectedly—the Garlic Noodles. This side dish goes with just about everything and sneaks up on you like a woman you didn’t know you needed in your life. One minute you’re “just trying a bite,” and the next you’re guarding the bowl like it’s your retirement fund. They were so good we genuinely considered ordering a second round. That’s how dangerous they are. The Garlic Shrimp came through in a big way—good-sized shrimp with a buttery garlic flavor that stayed balanced instead of drowning everything in grease. And then there was the ribeye, cooked perfectly medium, great portion, and loaded with flavor thanks to that shiitake mushroom sauce. Steak plus sunset plus competent cooking is a pretty undefeated combo. And dessert? The Kā‘anapali Pie is the mic drop: brownie crust, banana, macadamia nut ice cream, whipped cream, caramel, chocolate… basically a dessert that shows up wearing a crown and doesn’t apologize for it. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Bottom line: great meal, great service, and a view that does half the flirting for you. Reservations recommended—especially this time of year.

The food was pretty good!!! The calamari was great!!! The fried rice could’ve been a bit better. A bit too salty! Overall though! Great food!! And loved the atmosphere and our waiter was amazing!!!

Excellent overall Experience. Japengo has a fantastic location on the Hyatt Property, overlooking the Pools, Ocean and massive open Lobby front side. The approach is cool and overall layout is very fun with so many different seating options and perspectives. Cool round bar near entry to hang out at and take it in. Our server Burt was very gracious and knowledgeable and really made us comfortable talking about all things related. We had Spicy Edamane, Seared Hamachi and Garlic Noodles to start and they were all outstanding with great very distinct flavors and textures. For dinner we had the Chefs Special Roll and a Blackened Ahi Roll. Both were beautiful and delicious, very good. Both were California Roll inside, then the Chefs Special had Ahi and Onaga with Black Squid Ink Roe and the other had Blackened Ahi with Wasabi Roe. They treated us to a Pineapple Upside Down Cake which Beautiful and absolutely Delicious. Thank you, Burt and Japengo Team

We went to Japengo for our 4th wedding anniversary and they did not disappoint. They have a great outdoor seating balcony with great views. The interior deco is like a modern Asian / Japanese look that was cool. Tip* - you can just pull up to the front valet area and let them know you are there for reservations at Japengo and they will provide free parking for you. (Get your ticket validated at the restaurant) and don’t forget to tip your valet! We had the chicken and the steak. The steak was the best steak on our entire visit. Super moist and tender. Perfect. The jadori chicken was tasty, nothing wrong with it but it didn’t impress. We also got the mango prawn salad which could have been more / better. Clams were good in a white wine garlicky sauce - yum. I was eating this sauce with my spoon at the end. Many dishes were highlighting the shiitake mushrooms and the mushroom side dish was also good. Service was good, a little slow. We were done with apps and plates taken and waited another 35 minutes for our main course to come out. Seemed a bit long. We got an amazing dessert there that we think was the best one out of the 4-5 we had around Maui during our stay. It was a layered browny / chocolate cake and ice cream dish and it was very tasty. We would definitely go back and try more of their dishes. We were bummed we didn’t try the fish instead of the chicken. Next time!
